Breeding Question
Hi Guys and Gals,
Its been a while since i've posted on this site - although i do pop in every now and then. Dont know if any of you remember the 'problem' i had last year with my 3 spurthighed torts??? No ??? Ok i'll do a quick recap. The top and tail of it was that i'd been breeding youngsters off my trio for a couple of years quite successfully and then i found this site and it was pointed out to me that the parents, although both being spurthighed, were different subspecies - making the youngsters hybrids. Well i kept the parents apart last year - to stop any 'funny buisness' going on and i also spent a lot of time trying to find a suitable mate for my female. Whilst i suceeded in the first part - she laid 11 eggs and none were fertile after incubation - i never managed to find a suitable mate. This leads me to my question? Is there a scheme that anyone knows of where tortoises are 'loaned' out to other breeders to help keep blood strains pure or would anyone be willing to lend one of their babies to a breeder (not commercial i must add) so that thorough breed young can be kept in the hobby? Cheers

Hi Antony,
I do recall your previous post. Such a shame nothing came to fruition. On the breeder lending question, although I am not a breeder, but I am pretty sure a breeder would not allow their torotises to stud this way without the observation of quarantine etc...., also a breeding pair of torotises have to be hapy together for a long time before you will find they will breed, its a very different sitaution to say breeding dogs. I am sure if you keep on looking eventually you will find a perfect mate for your tortoises. I hope this helps. Ade
