i would have saved money if i had done this first. but i got better understanding of theyre needs by getting marcuses. a couple of things to maybe think about how many are you planning on having, i got 1 but now have 3 (theyre addictive) so i needed more space. and the bigger the viv the more it costs to run electric, substrate. hope this helps, anything else just ask, there are star people with lots more experience than me and are all willing to offer advice and opininions. i got my first 18 mths ago so i consider myself a novice still learning all the time.

I'm having two star's that's why I'm thinking of starting with a bigger setup. On that subject what's best viv, terrarium or a tort table ? I know pets at home are not the best but i saw a tortoise terrarium setup yesterday with all the heat lamps and uvb lights, thermometer, hydrometer plus alot more for £189.00. What liked about it was the size I could quite easily keep 2 or 3 in there till they were quite big.

Hi Gaz,
Dont get fooled by the great price of the terrarium and other stuff in PAH, to be perfectly hounest there are a lot of redfoot keepers on this forum who keep and breed redfoots in perfect humidity using a tortoise table which if you can screw a few bits of wood together would save you a fortune compared to the shop brough glass box. The hygrometers in these kits are from what I have heard next to useless, you are far better investing your money into a decent one of these as too much humidity is probably worse than not enough. I am sure Sarah would be able to steer you in the right direction in this department as she is a successful keeper and breeder of reds.

Regarding set ups for any tortoise - I'm generally very wary of a 'complete kit' as they generally aren't. There'll be ok stuff and totally useless stuff. There isn't a one stop kit that can possibly cover the different species of tortoise. My personal view is that you get better value buying the bespoke kit you need rather than buying a kit with stuff you won't use (or swiftly replace/upgrade). |
