Default Rabbit cages - suitability

HI,

I currently have two tort tables going on in my very small back room! I will soon be rehoming two babies. Which will bring my total number of torts to 4! The two babies can go in together and my two older ones can as well
Now I've seen this:

http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/rodent...bit_cage/13324

would this be suitable for use (with a few adaptions?) For me it would be ideal as it would save me alot of space!! I could have this ontop of a cupboard (for all their bits & pieces) in the alcove with would really help me out! I am waiting for ZooPlus to get back to me with the heights of the individual cages - I think they are approx 50cms high - which would give me enough room for light/heat source.

They would also be more convienient to store away when we get our lovely hot summer ( ) and they all go out into their outdoor enclosure.

At the mo I've got one tort table on top of my computor cupboard which is a bit high, and the other one is on my (dinner) table!!!! So as you can see, I really could do with something abit more suitable!!!!

Please bear in mind, that it will only be used as short term housing just before and just after hibernation period. I will have them outdoors all summer.

I know a lot of people use these and are really happy with them (I just looked in the picture section and they do look good) my question is more 'will the double decker type be suitable?'

Hope someone out there can advise......

what substrate will you be using especially in the top level
how much weight will the top level be able to support
how will you be able to attatch lights for the bottom level

in theory it looks good

As well as Linda's concerns, isn't there a hole in the bottom of the top tray?

Hi Linda,

Substrate - I currently use Ambiouse

Weight - these are designed for rabbits so I should imagine they would withstand the weight of torts & substrate.

Lights - Er, well, um... maybe I could put a piece of wood under the top tray and hang them from there? Or... what about where the 'nest' box is on the lower level at the side (on the left as you look at it in the picture), maybe you could put something there???? Ooooooooh! There's always summit that goes wrong!!!! OR, couldn't you mount the light onto a strip of wood that rests on the bars (do you see what I mean... )

Com'on all you DIY'ers out there.... surely there has to be a way????? Doesn't there????????? Plu-easeeeeeeeeee!

Sorry just saw the post just added re hole, yeah but that could be sorted by putting a piece of wood on the bottom of the tray - I think.. thats one of the modernisations I was thinking of in my original post....

linda i like ur diy head bunk tables

it wud actually be quite easy to create bunk tables as such......altho the lighting wud need a bit of tweeking so that the top bunk doesn not burn or anyhting.

lilacgeorge...if you do like the idea of this then it's not excatly really hard to make, just need to beable to create a recangle struture. if i have the measurements then i cud do u a hand drawn design and a cutting list of what you need.

yea thats fine.........i have made tort table sin the past but not double ones but i have made double vivariums so i think i can make a design from a combination of the two.

i just need to know the measurements of depth, lenght and width and i can come up with soemthing, and u shud have a builders yard not too far away or a hardware store and if u give them a cutting list then they will cut ur wood for u and rarely charge if u buy the wood from them.

yea just pm me and i will give it ago

if need be and u still need help then i can give u step by step instrucyions
