Default how much is enough?

between stompie and the babies i use a bag of the mixed salad mixed with a handful of readigrass.will this be enough food for stompie?babies have a small handfull between them and stomp has the rest.hes eats it in pretty much one sitting then spends ages looking for more?is he still hungry or just bein a guts?x

He may still be hungry but it doesn't mean that he hasn't had enough. How has his weight gain and general growth been whilst he's been on the bagged stuff?

growth wise hes doing realy well,i think.as for weight my scales broke afew months ago so havent weighed his for a while.must get some more

He's probably doing fine and like any tortoise he's a little greedy. Though I tend to feed mine until they're completely full in one sitting. You could up his food and see if that settles him.

If you're trying to keep it natural... what kind of limit do they have in the wild?

I'm no expert on what tortoises actually graze on in the wild, but I can tell you this. Depending on the salad mix your feeding your tortoise it is likely that there are big differences between that and grasses wich are most likely the tortosis main food supply. I dont think making food that might not be the best for your tortoise available all the time is a good practice.

Bagged salad is little more than water but supplements can be added. In the wild, depending on the species they will have a variety of foods available at specific times of the year. Some even live on crops in fields in Croatia and are killed for their troubles

very interesting , one thing to take into consideration when feeding bagged foods is there protein content , for example romaine lettuce contains 30 % protein !, in fact most bagged foods contain high levels of protein which isn't a good thing without being ballanced up with high level's of fibre ! . To take up Alans point , well you do get wild rabbits eating crops such as lettuce but in reality they mainly eat grass and clover !!.

I'm not getting drawn into this ,but i will say is that wild tortoise's food is restricted , what about all the time spent dug in in the height of summer and what about the times in spring and autumn when there also dug in because its too cold , so you see food is restricted . Not old school but fact !!!!
