Default Just found this little sweetheart.

A baby collard dove. They nest in our very tall pine tree every year and this poor little baby fell out and was laying on the grass underneath. I rang the vet and they said I could take it in to be euthanised as they are not in the surgery over night to feed it and the chances are it will die anyway. I can't put it back in the nest as it's so far up and the parents of pigeons and doves don't recognise their chicks once they fall out of the nest so they wont feed it even if I get it up as high as I can. So, I am going to try my damnedest to hand rear it. I have already fed it as it's crop was empty and it was squeaking. I happened to have some chick crumb for when willow was sick and a rescue site said they can eat that. I have to mix it with water and put it in a bag, cut off the corner and the little one sticks its beak in like it would it's parents mouth and sucks out the food. It ate really well and is now sleeping on my lap under my laptop, keeping warm. I think it could be a long couple of days and nights. There is the probability that it will die but I'll do my best.

Hi Wendy. My son's just come in from work and said the best thing is to get some Hills A/D. The vets should stock it. I'll warn you it stinks to high heaven!!!
Around 2ml from a syringe every other hour should be fine. If the bird does well and gets bigger, then you can start mixing in some mealworms in a few weeks.
We've had allsorts here that have been brought into the vets and needed 24 hour care. Problem is my son then goes to work and I do the care all day long.

The one thing that may happen obviously is that it could imprint.
You could try the RSPCA but they are pretty crap. Today my son's workplace had a call regarding a dog that had been tied to some railings and left. The RSPCA said they wouldn't come unless it was left for at least 2 hours. In this heat, the poor thing would be dehydrated or worse, so one of the nurses went up to collect it and bring it in to check for a chip.

Anyway, good luck with the little love.

Thanks Emma, I'll get some of that tomorrow. He's just had his second feed and all seems to be working well. Crop emptying and pooing well. Luckily he's not still on crop milk so can eat other food. I have given him some guardian angel supplement with his food. I'll keep you all posted.

He survived the night and is doing well so far. Fingers crossed he continues to thrive.
