I am certainly no expert but I would say you have a Herman there, but i can never remember the different sub species names, there is a great section on the different herman sub species will have a search for it myself too.

Just found the thread i was refering to. I think its a herman HB.
It's the sticky thread in pictures by Hermanchris23. I am not experienced enought o guess the sex of your tortoise. But i am sure there will be someone here that will be able to have a go unless it is too young still to sex. It is helpful if you can get good clear close up pics of tail and rear end scutes and plastron of the tortoise. This way there is as much information as posible to determine the sex of your tortoise. thanks for the help guys, its greatly appreciated!
The Jackson's Ratio does apply to herman's doesn't it? If so she is still underweight to hibernate, im slowly building her up to full strength though! |

Yes you are right Jacksons Ratio does apply to hermans, but if I were you I wouldn't panic about building the tortoise up for hibernation.
Usually if you get a new tortoise late in the year it's sometimes advisable to over winter as you are not familiar with the new tortoise and won't really know if he / she is healthy or not, and you should certtainly not feed the tortoise up to gain weight espaecially so late in the season. Someone with more experience will probably be better to advise, but I think this is what i would do if i were you, but don't hold me to it. trying to help as best I can. Ade

I was planning to overwinter her anyway because i didn't know her history, but when i found her she was really quite undereight and unhealthy, and now with a bit of attention she is full of energy and a completely different tortoise!

Yep hermanni boettgeri
In some cases if the tortoise has been hibernated it will naturally wind down without you wanting it to.
