i keep ornates and i am trying to breed them. No sucess yet, i will see what happens next season.
A friend in scotland has a pair of three toes and has had eggs (not fertile).

Hi Jono,
Have you or your friend hibernated your box turtles? You need to to have the males be fertile. How long have you had your ornates and your deserts? I just got a pair of deserts myself this year.

Dan

i have had them for a while about well i started about 10 years ago when i was a kid. i haven't hibernated them, i have been scared to do it. i have only ever lost one turtle ( due to excesive bot fly) and dont want to start now. i always reduce the temp down over winter though.
this year i have changed their enviroment to see if it helped, nothing yet but we shall see. this year i have given them the cooling off period and are almost ready for hibernation. i have a final weigh in before i let them go to sleep. maybe next week or the one after it.

i have 6 (3,3) one desert ornate male, others are all ornates.
my friend did not hibernate his either, in fact he didnt even mate them. Still laid 2 eggs last year and the year before. i dont know why.

Jono

Hopefully this coming up year you'll get eggs . Wow 10 years for ornates is great. I've had these guys, my most recent group, 3 to 4 years. They are very hard to keep outside of their native habitat. 3 of my ornates are hibernating and 3 are spending the winter inside. My deserts I just got so no hibernating this year. Hopefully I'll get eggs this coming up year too

Dan
