is this suitable?
Hi,i have a basking and uv bulb on for 12-14 hrs a day then i switch over to a heat mat for nite time, i was wondering if this is suitable. if not what would be adviseable for keeping tort warm at nite. cheers deb

To be honest i used a heat mat only when we had the realy freezing weather. My girls are fine now with just the room temp during the night as it never drops below 18dgrs. you do have to very careful with the heat mat incase they burn themselves.

Hi, it really depends on what species of tortoise you have and where the heat mat is positioned. Generally for species such as Hermann, Horsfeild etc it's not needed unless the temp goes below 10c at night

Cheers for the reply I forgot to say that my tort is a herman. I don't no wot the temp gets down to at nite as I don't leave heating on while I'm in bed, and was scared it wud be too cold for him. He is housed in a viv, do you think he would be ok if I turned basking light off at roughly midnight and then turned back on at 7.30am.

Torts need a day/ night cycle Deb so you only really need your lights on for between 12 and 16 hours a day.
If I want overnight heat then I use a ceramic lamp with a thermostat. |
