Try looking around the roots of the plants, my tortoises when they bury down, hide near roots.
Are you sure he/she has not shimmid up the corners?
They can go down up to three inchs if the torts are small.

Like Sandy has said check around plant roots, mine can always be found there. How high are the sides of the enclousure as they don't look very tall. Could he have climbed out?

the pete dips before the log role and its higher than there length so they cant climb out, I've had another look around but still no joy - I cant help but think that he's been taken by something (big bird or cat?) but they're the size of a big palm??

I feel so guilty - really ****

I just hope he has buried himself and pops up tomorrow morning

I have had a thought try watering the enclousure. All my hermanns emerge in the rain and I find the watering can has the same effect!

hi

he may have still climbed out as said before they use the right angles of the enclosure to shimmy up

also if one piggy backed the other he still may have been able to climb out

have you checked the rest of the garden also look for newly disturbed earth / soil

have you tried putting tempting food both in and out of the enclosure

are you going to put a net or something over the enclosure to protect the other one

i am really keeping every thing crossed that he will turn up
