I don't know of anyone this side the water that would experiment with there animals ,i do chip my own tortoise's , but !!, this has nothing to do with saving money, more about knowing the jobs been done right. I do inject my own animals but its not something i would advice others to do unless you know what your doing.

It sounds like you don't trust your vet

All my torts are currently at the vets getting chipped I don't really know much about them but the vet said each tortoise will be given a number and the number will relate to a database with all my details on it.

Well... I don't know how well you are going to be able to read a chip in the back leg of a 200lb aldabra when it does not want to come out of its shell.

If the chip is placed in the thigh there is a chance the chip will migrate.

Notice when a tortoise 'clams up' the fore legs are exposed.

Like everything else in tortoise keeping... old habits die hard.

I was thinking of the big guy's and girls, back leg may have a long wait to read a chip, or insert one. I even look at my own young Leo who clam's up to stranger's.

Is there more chance of migration in a front leg though. Just thinking from experience my torts fronts legs go up, down, waved, knocked the lot. Back legs seem more chilled

That's why the change... it has been found that in the rear there is a good deal of evidence to show the can migrate. So... try something different. It seems more practicle in to insert it in the front limb.

As far as I can tell the chips we use have only been around 30 years total. I'd also be willing to bet that the frequency and technology has changed quite a few times over that period making it necessary to use a different reader for each change.

Oh... I love the idea... 'we've been doing it that way forever... why change it'.

One of the leading tortoise vets in the world... Pioneer of endoscopic sexing of tortoises... Google Dr. Steven Divers and see what you come up with... This is the person who came up with the idea.

Makes no difference to me what anyone else says or does. I do think it is important to present new ideas and explain why those new ideas might be better. Hopefully other keepers will give it a little thought.

Just think of this... what if keepers were still feeding tinned dog/cat food and tethering their tortoises to the tree... because we've always done it that way.
