Hi Rach, I was thinking about getting a red light as well (for my tort that is, the recession hasn't hit that hard yet!) as it is starting to drop very cold during the night (around 15c according to the minmax thermometer). I am a bit uncertain now though, because I wouldn't want Ovid to be awake all night every night because of the red light

I wouldn't worry Rach. If he can see some light I don't think it would wake or worry him. They sleep in daylight. Temps seem to wake, make them sleep, more than light xx

I am still wondering though...it does bother me a bit as Nick says, dont want Lily awake all night due to the red light. Dont want him getting stressed not knowing what on earth it is...
..that is, if he CAN see it or not.

I've never been convinced that torts don't 'see' the red light bulbs, this is why I always use ceramics for night time heat supply. However, it wouldn't give off a glare to create daylight. I think it is a possibility thats he notices a difference in light levels when it comes on and off, but as it is a new thing he may get used to it.

Why aren't torts supposed to be able to see red light?

Infra red I can understand, but why just not red light?

Even if they don't see colour, they would still be able to see in red light surely?

He might have been looking about whether you had the red light or not. there is also a blue moonlight bulb available. are you sure a heat source is needed just now especially when he is inside a hide under hay? maybe they can see in the dark anyway, red bulb or not
