Sulcata Reality Check!!

I first came across this site many years ago, but I just think that every now and again it should be dragged back for people to check through.......especially for those thinking of getting a sulcata in the UK!!
It makes a great read and really opens your eyes to what you can expect if your were to take on a sulcata.

there are lots of unsuitable animals kept as pets and a lot of animals kept unsuitably

sometimes 1 large animal is kept better than a dozen small animals,
its all down to the keeper

macaw parrots are really too big as a caged bird, but lots of people keep them

The Reality Check has been on here before. Whilst I can understand what it is getting at, I think that by the time most if not all people have found it are already well researched and know what care they need to be providing. Personally I agree they shouldn't be sold in pet shops and any good UKCB breeder will give the right and proper info and check the set up before they sell.

I also think the check is incredibly negative and yes things need doing differently like you can't lift and carry them but there are other ways and many owners do manage. The Reality Check (in my opinion) is that many owners find great joy in keeping Sulcatas and do a fabulous job, but they continue to be mis sold in pet shops and some times even the pet shop owner doesn't know what they are selling. The amount of times people have posted pics on sites of their beloved new Horsfield tort, when you look at the pic it is a baby Sulcata. It is this reality that needs checking.

I agree completely...Sulcatas are not for me.....but that reality check is just a scare tactic....

If it gave advice and explained that there were ways and means...but as Janer says it is just a negative nonsense

I know of a few responsible Sully keepers who have all poo-pooed this 'test'. Some don't or won't post anything about them, and that could include good advice; as they feel they are setting themselves up to get jumped on. That seems to be happening alot on this forum of late, which is a shame as it's friendliness and the approachability of some of it's more experienced keepers has always in my eyes been one of it's strengths.

Sulcatas are wonderful tortoises to keep. As long as the research is done properly and you are aware of how big they get and what their needs are then I see no problems.

I have to agree I know of keepers who will not under any circumstances post on here and yes it is a shame, I have helped out a few people of late with sully's, as I myself am gaining knowledge all the time, but also have the contacts to find out the answers if I cannot answer them. But unfortunately this has to be done by pm's, otherwise you are bombarded with insults and silly sulcata tests.

Unfortunately though I do not think we will ever change those narrow minded beings.

I own sulcata's and am very proud of them, so much so, I do take these comments personally.

I had a new sully recently and never even posted any pic's this time, how sad is that.
