Thanks for the reassurance everybody. The 3 in the viv at the shop seemed to be very happy and healthy. All were active, eating, in and out of water bowl, etc. so seemed OK. Will do as suggested and get him/her(?) checked out once he/she is finally in residence. Hopefully Friday, if we can manage to get a combi bulb delivered in time (the one thing the shop DIDN'T have in stock - aarrgghh! The frustration!).
Slightly off topic - joined the forum a while ago on my daughter's behalf. She's been saving since last summer to buy a tort but, bizarrely enough, had given up last week 'cause she thought she'd never manage to save enough. We were actually going to the pet shop to buy a stick insect instead!! |

I would say 99.9% of torts sold in shops are not UK bred. I can't say I've read of any imported torts being ill and dying from any members on here. I have read scare stories about it though. I have Slovenian bred Hermann torts, they can now understand English pretty well and have never been ill either

Keep good temp's up when you get your tort, bath regular, keep away from cool draught's to get him/her acclimatised to the new home and settled. Coming out of a viv into an open enclosure, i think is a big change. Feeding the same food's as the shop for a few week's is not a bad idea, before any diet changes, the less sudden changes at first the better.

Good point well made 16 shells. They had cress and bits of carrot but will ask what else they've been giving when we go and collect. Will check what temps they've been used to as well. It's more complicated than having a baby, having a tortoise!! Still at least there's no crying to contend with |

1 of my Horsefields is from Slovenia & I have had NO trouble what so ever. She is however very shy & timid, but i don't call that a problem.
I have just kept a very close eye on her. enjoy your tort & gud luk. Sue |
