Both my horsefields were from a pet shop which is also, according to some, a no goer!
Granted one of mine had worms, but she has spent the summer in the garden so maybe that was where the worms came from? who knows!
I saw my purchase as a kind of rescue mission, if you think of it like that it should be less worrying. Although you are taking a risk with it that you could be unlucky and get a poorly one. But saying that... anyones tort could become poorly at any time and cost £100's!

personally id get it but thats just me!

Not a worry at all. You might want to treat the animals for protozoa as a precaution as you should do with any new tortoise but the animals that come from these farms are no worse than any others you might purchase from any breeder... in fact... they might even be better.

I have today paid for a Hermann tort at a local garden centre pet department (can I name names? - ******** in Tamworth). The staff seem pretty knowledgeable (apart from the usual problem of having to flog vivs), all the cages/enclosures seem clean and the animals healthy and well cared for.

The 3 torts were all quite lively, scuttling around, climbing and eating.

My worry is this - having read several of the care sheets linked from the forum, one advises against buying from such places because the torts are usually bred in Slovenia and can carry worms/parasites.

When I rang the shop back and asked they said yes - their tortoises are bred in Slovenia or Macedonia.

We haven't actually brought the little chap home yet as we don't have the correct UV/heat lamp set-up (have posted about this on another thread).

What should I do? Get a refund and run a mile (and break my daughter's heart )? Carry on 'cause my worries are unfounded?

I am utterly confused dot com. Please help.

I know which garden centre you refer to! The torts look nice in my opinion and whenever i have gone in they always seem to have fed the right things. Just a shame they house them in vivs.

Obviously a vet check is a good idea.

I have my eye on the african grey parrot for a grand!!

How much for an african grey, you can buy a handreared grey lovingly bought up in a family home for £550,we used to sell ours for £600 but we wouldnt let them go to there new homes untill 16weeks old, some sell at 12 weeks which we felt was too young.

I think you may have missed the boat (or the bird!) there. No African grey when we were in there yesterday.
