Default Digging?

Hey everyone,
Charlie has been digging holes in his indoor enclosure recently and burying himself (under the bamboo fence he knocked over ) in the shade. Might this be to get out of the heat? If so should i turn his basking lamp off and just leave his UV light on? He is going outside for a few hours each day - which he loves (and he's not digging out there).
Just wondering if he's ok in this heat really!
Appreciate the help,
Angie x

Hi Angie

With the temperatures as they are at the moment, I am sure he/she can do without the light on,
especially in the middle of the day. The UV is whats needed while its so hot.
My tortoises have been getting up before seven oclock in the morning, grazing and feeding. Then
disappearing for most of the day. Only coming out to graze again late afternoon, early evening.
Last night one female was still out grazing at 8-30pm.
Is there a reason your tortoise cant go out all day long?

Thanks Sandy - only that i'm not home all day and i don't trust him to be outdoors yet without anyone to check on him. Probably being over protective but working a 12.5 hr shift i'd worry all day, if - like today i'm in and out all day i leave him outside as i'm always around to check on him in between getting stuff done.
Hope that makes sense x

It does take a while to get the confidence to leave them out all day when your not at home.
I work normally too, the first thing I do when I have been out or at work, is check the tortoises.
A habit worth getting into<g>.
So far in the last 27yrs I have had no problems<g>. This heat is more of a concern than normal
I must say. Thankfully I am at home at the moment, so not such a worry.

Hey Sandy,

I do tyhis now and it's not like he can go anywhere from his indoor enclosure
I'm off for the next 3 weeks so i can put him out early morning and get him in late at night, i must admit he seems much happier outside then when he's indoors. He's awake and active for longer hours, has more of an appetite and bathe's himself thoughout the day in his little 'pool'.
As for digging - he only does this in his indoor enclosure, and it's only been since he's been going outside, i bring him in and he burrows into a little hole then sleeps till next morning - bless his little shell!!!!

If they are digging inside and not outside, then it tells my the temperature is too high
inside. He/she is digging down to aestivate to get away from the heat.

Gotcha - well i've turned the basking lamp off now, whilst it's so warm. Charlie has been wondering around his indoor enclosure ok..............but he appears to prefer to bury himself to go to sleep
Anyway he's out in the garden now - basking in the sun on his slate (bless - he loves that slate ) s i think i'm gonna go join him with a few magazines before the temperature gets too hot out there.
Thanks again for the info Sandy - appreciate it
