What to do at Holiday times?!?!?
Hi - what does everyone do with there torts at holiday time?
We have a touring caravan & often go away for weekend breaks & normally a fortnight in the summer. I suppose in theory I could take Karma with us in the warmer weather but it would be too cold for the Spring break etc. So what does everyone do with there torts during these times? We normally go at Easter but we are a bit stuck as to what we should do with her. Is there any tortoise boarding that anyone knows of in Scotland? Thanks

I tried the tortoise boarding option at a really great place, only problem my torts did not think it was great. I was away a fortnight when I got them home they had lost weight and their skin was a bit dry and flaky. I took them to the vet who after a thorough check diagnosed stress! All the unfamiliar smells and more restricted outdoor space maybe. I followed the vets advice and they were fine in a few weeks. The next time we went away I shipped the whole kit over to my mothers. They were fine, perfectly healthy aand had even gained a little weight. My mother adored them, my father has dined out on the stories of her over careful tortoise care. Men they can be so unfair, she only got up at 4am in a panic because she'd forgotten to bath them once.
On another occaision I left them at home with my eldest son. That worked well apart from one night when he rang at 11pm complaining bitterly that he had only just managed to find my stupid tortoise after searching the run for hours. Bet he was exaggerating like his grandfather! Good luck finding good holiday care. |

Maybe you have a friend who can take care of your tort while you're away?
That's the best option.Travelling can be a bit stressful for a tort but some people have taken them with them and tortoise has been ok travelling in a car quite few hours so.... I know places London and Cardiff area who's taking tortoises while holiday but don't know any in Scotland unfortunately. I have a friend who can take care of my tort when we are going somewhere.

I am sure my mum would feed her every day but she would not be able to bath her as she cannot touch Karma, and she certainly would not be good at removing the poo she always does from her bathtub ... so I am kinda stuck
Kids are dying to go away but struggling as to what we do with Karma.

I have two options, my son will come and stay and look after my tortoises, and he is virtually blind, but knows my tortoises well.
Or one of my neighbours will come in to feed water etc. I also have another lined up who volunteered to look after them. Getting a friend or family is far better than boarding tortoises, as the change can stress them out big time.

whatever you do decide make sure your tort isn't put with anyone elses or even come in contact with them, what about asking a zoo or similar if theres anything near you, if you don't ask you don't know or the vets they might know of somewhere, we have the same problem and usually end up not going, I suppose if your tort table/whatever is small enough you could take them and I remember someone saying that they travel better if its reasonably cold then they will sleep or in a dark box with plenty of bedding, rather than trying to keep them warm.
