Default hay

Does anyone over wintering their tortoise use Hay for the tortoise to sleep in? i was considering using some if it keeps the area they are in a bit cosier as i find the coco coir thats damp gets cold.....if so what kind of hey do you use or is it just the pets at home stuff you can buy??

Hay if it gets damp can get mould spores, which is really bad for tortoises:0(

I agree with Sandy. I water my substrate but try to do it in the morning giving time for it to dry a bit, mind I don't let temps drop too low overnight (hatchling table) Hay has also been known to cause injuries to nares & eyes. They don't need bedding but if you really want some what about readigrass? You would still need to change it regularly as the same applies, all grass products are prone to mould. Readigrass is softer, smells nice & it wont hurt if they choose to eat some

if i overwintered my torts i would leave the substrate dryer and spray the torts themselves a couple of times per day as well as normal bathing.

wigwamman - Thats what i've been doing as felt the substrate got too cool over night. Ive gone off the Hay idea. i think ill just leave as is as Quinn seems to be doing ok.
