Bloating is usually a sign of renal failure but when it reaches that stage in renal failure the tortoise usually has gout associated with it which prevents the tortoise from walking properly.

One of my Stars has shown signs of bloating and I can't imagine what causes it. What I look for before I worry is if the tortoise can walk tall.

Good it turned out well but it is also good that you sought out the help of a vet so you now know what to worry about or not in this case.

The problem with 'retained water' is that renal failure causes retained water(The kidneys shut down and there is no way to pass any fluids).

Is it possible that it was bladder stone blockage and it has now been able to pass it?

Bloating is usually a sign of fluid in the body cavity. A stone could cause it but the passing of the stone would probably not relieve it immediately.
