chickens
My dad has been worried sick that none of the chickens were gonna hatch, well today a few have and some are starting to break free
Here is my favourite pick of one of them [the chickens are blue andalusian bantam]

I see no chickens!
My wife has just persuaded me to build a chicken run for her, she wants those big Foghorn Leghorn ones! We have cleared loads of space at the bottom of the garden under the trees and I'll build the run there, lots of foxes round here though so it'll have to be very secure. |

This may be a stupid question, but indulge someone who knows absolutely nothing about chickens for a moment! In winter do they need heating in their coop, or are they OK without?
I suspect the answer is they don't need it, after all chickens have been kept for thousands of years and I doubt heating was even practical until recently. I know my granddad kept chickens many years ago and I don't suppose he heated their coop, but I just want to be sure. Where's the best place to read up on the basics of keeping chickens? |

up to recently we had 5 lilac andulusian hens,we sold them when we thought we were moving.used to get 4/5 eggs a day in summer.graham go to a decent newsagent and you should find pratical poultry magazine ,you dont need to heat the coop but watch out for rats visiting.and we used to feed layers mash than pellets as it kept them occupied more.
