Dave, that is one of the best inside the egg photos I've seen. They are coming along nicely.

Dan, if you're there. Noticed tonight that two of the eggs had dented. Took the lid off the tub and took the tub out of the incubator. Turned my back for a moment and when I looked again, the dents had gone. Thought I was seeing things. Put them back in the incubator, couple of hours later, the dents are back. Took the tub out again and watched the dents pop out as the humidity abd temperature dropped. Humidity is still in the 90% range and temps are still 28-29C. I've been adding small amouts of water to the vermiculite weekly so its moist to the touch but not damp. Not sure whats going on, is the shell weakening as the turtle grows with calcium being used? Why the dents in the optimal conditions but popping out when out of the incubator and humidity down to 75-80%? should I drop the humidity a little? The embryos are still ok at the moment, they're moving about. I've put a little more moistened vermiculite around the eggs, covering them a little more.

Dents are fine if the air humidity is up and your substrate is damp. Nothing to worry about. Are you opening the lid at least once a day to exchange air?

Panic over I think. I've taken the humidity down to 90% from 95% and they've straightened out again. Definety more pliable than a couple of weeks ago though.

Sorry Dan didn't see you'd replied, thanks. Yes, the incubator is opened and the tub lid is removed for a few minutes every evening.

They do get more pliable towards the end of incubation.

Well I held off for a couple of days to ward of the "Kirkie Curse" of posting hatchling pic's just to have it all go wrong but I'm fairly confident this one is going to be ok.
Pipped the egg yesterday morning (Day 50), really alert today. I'm assuming theres a big yolk sac under her so I'm keeping things dark and warm so hopefully she'll sit tight until it's absorbed. (I'm saying she, I bumped the temps up to 29C early on and I think my thermometers a bit wonky anyway). Anyway, I'm rambling... Thanks for your help Danny (and moral support from Bindi of course ). |
