Common Snapper Turtles can grow larger than Gollum. A large male can top the scales at nearly 20Kg, and max size at 50cm. They are indeed potential monsters, which need to be treated with great respect. I have hibernated mine for a number of years, in their separate enclosures outside. They hunker down in October and emerge in March, and spend most of the time during the winter in deep slumber below the water, and of course, during the worst of winter weather below the ice.

What size enclosure do you keep them in outside? Do you keep anything in with them? Always fancied one but I've never been certain on what a respectable (not minimum don't like providing just minimum space) sized enclosure would be for an adult

Good to hear, The Waterland Tubs are brilliant accommodation for turtles.

He looks pretty impressive. Does he require much care? As in does he need his pond cleaning out often or does it maintain itself if you have the correct set up; like filters etc? Do you actually ever handle him and give him a weigh-in every so often? How old is he and what size/age was he when you got him? Sorry lots of questions

The Waterland Tubs look great but very expensive and if I had turtles I would like see-through sides so I could see them swimming etc. but appreciate they would probably hate seeing out - perhaps one-way!
