Sexing Florence.
Florence will be two in August. I know she is a little young to sex at the moment but I have my suspicions and would like some opinions please. She measures 102mm and weighs 150g.

Thanks for the replies Gordon and suze. I have been suspicious about Florence for a while but I was still hoping you would all say it was too early to tell. Or that she was still a girl.
I will have to put some thought into names. It will be hard not to think of her/him as Florence. |

I'm thinking male too I'm afraid. I went through this with my original Florence, who I renamed Hugo. Now I don't ever think of him as Florence at all and we've since got a few females, one of whom took the name Florence.
I'm in the same position as you with my current two year old. I gave him a male name, thinking he was male as he hatched later than I expected, but he's now looking female. I have some names in mind and know that by his/her size and weight, it's pretty unlikely that it's a male now, so I need to get us all used to referring to the little one with a new name. You do adapt quite quickly to the new name. Some members haven't changed their torts names however and there are females with male names and males with female names, so it's not altogether necessary, but if you're like me, I'm fussy about my torts and enjoy choosing names. I have no doubt you'll think of something you really like.

Emma I have been making a list of names but nothing seems to suit. He just looks so like a Florence. I'm even finding it hard to type "he". My eldest son thinks we should keep the name Florence but that doesn't seem right to me either. I'm glad you say that it doesn't take long to adjust and I'm sure you are right but it feels really weird at the moment.
I'd love to hear what names you have in mind for Chester, all your girls have lovely names. I think it's harder to name a male tortoise, but maybe that is just because I have been thinking of mine as girls. |

I had a Betty that became Bertie, I think because it was similar it as easier to adjust to.
How about Terrance? |

Thanks alley cat, I might try thinking of her as Terrance for a few days and see if that helps. I suppose there is no real rush to rename.

Oh dear, looks like there is no hope that she might still be a Florence.
