Can any one help - silly question re emigrating
Hi, sorry to post a silly question, but I was wondering if anyone knows if I can take my tortoises with me when I emigrate to OZ. I know I can take the dogs but havnt had much luck with finding out about the torts. Dont want to take them all, but would really like to take my sons as it will break his heart if we have to leave him here. (and maybe the others will accidently on purpose find there way in the crate too).
I asked my cousin who lives in sydney if they sold them there but he was about as much use as a "chocolate teapot". He dosnt have any pets and wouldnt allow his children any. He dosnt understand why I would even think about shipping any of my animals. Any advice on where to look would be great, have tried to google it. It could be the deal breaker!!! |

From what I have read on various Forums! You cannot take any non native species in or out of Australia. If found they are confiscated.

If you look here they are allowed, but a permit is required. Scroll down to the second section.

In Australia you need to get a permit from the NPWS to kep captive bred reptiles and they are very difficult to get...a friend of mine went out there and ended up leaving her pride and joy red tail boa with me to look after because she couldn't take him speak to them over there to ask.

Ive just googled can you buy tortoises in australia and it came up with a web page. So you must be able to get them, but will have to look into if and how I can take them. Wouldnt mind but they are rescues so they have to come with us. Just found out they have changed the rules on dogs as we i.e. England is a rabies risk country so they have to be rabies free for six months. So that means blood tests for six months.....
God its a bleeding pain this emigrating business... |

The Australians are VERY particular about import and export of any 'living' material... plant or animal. This is to protect the unique Australian ecosystem.
Going through customs in Australia, you have to get anything made of wood checked before you take it through for example. Any rules regarding the import of pets will be national not by state.
