1 active 1 lazy horsfield
Hi all as you know I picked up 2 lovely horsfield's from Gordon a couple of week's ago. I've got a question regarding 1 of them. Mable is up as soon as the light's come on at 8am she has a wonder around has a bite to eat then goes sleep she does this on and off up to about 3pm. I then give her a bath and she then tends to settle down for the night. However Stanley tends to do not a lot lol. I normally have to wake him up at around 11ish to put him on the food slate where he may have a very small nibble ( if at all ) then runs back to bed and burrows down (didn't realise they could run so quick lol ) and if I didn't get him back up for his bath I think he may just stay there. Should I be concerned or do you think Stan is is still just settling in
Many thanks Dave |

I think its settling in. With tortoises in the wild they know when they come out to eat they are exposed to predators and may eat quick and then look for cover or until get use to environment. in other words they need a little escape pod. if they have something against their shells when under cover they can be a little less stressed thinking they are burrowed down and safe. I put a towel , paper or vet bedding in houses so they can burrow under. Horsfields seem to like it particularly. if indoors watch out for fire hazard!

All mine have different characters, some get up before the lights go on, some get up as the lights come on and some get up around 10 - 11am, and they all go to bed at different times in fact the clocks went forward and 2 of my horsfields aren't even up yet x

Thanks for the advice, I think I am going to have a change around in the table as the house area for my 2 is absolutely massive and they haven't even stepped foot in there. I think I will take it out and replace it with a couple of log hides/plant pots to make the table a bit more interesting. Should i fill these with hay/straw or similar? Mind you they seem more than happy digging and hiding in the 4/5 inches of substrate and me spending ages trying to find them for there baths!!!! expecially Stan lol
