Question about second clutches
I was wondering if it is common for horsfields to lay second clutches of eggs. If so how long after the first clutch on average would it be, and also what is the likelihood of them returning to the same laying spot.
I am asking because I saw Mavis sniffing the ground today which she has done prior to laying both last year and this year. She laid three eggs last Friday. |

Second clutches are common in captivity and it all depends on the females fat reserves whether she has a 2nd, 3rd or 4th clutch in a year. Second clutches are usually 30 days after the first (sometimes shorter and sometimes longer). If the same spot is a good spot females will usually lay in the area again.

Cheers Danny. Fast as ever! I suppose just over a week is a little soon then. She just looked suspiciously furtive sniffing all around.

Mine go pretty much spot on to a 30day gap between clutchs and stomp around a fair bit beforehand.
