our first houses were made out of Tea Crates, with a removable lid which hubby made, covered in roofing felt sides and roof and very cheaply insulated. The crates were free, if you can still find them. They are a good big size and plenty tall enough to take a heat bulb, the 'lid/roof' had an inner lip to hold it in place, we've even used cheap carpet to line the walls of a house and cork floor tiles stuck to the floor both work well for insulation. The doorway was cut into a side and with either a door or lift up ramp and the crates were placed on paving slabs to keep them dry, they were good cheap first houses and cost next to nothing to make.

It's even better to use stuff you have or can get for free, that's why I always save bits of wood as I may use it for building tortoise things x

Brilliant ideas and pictures! I have ordered the flat roofed version for mine, it even has a little window. Now I just need to work out where I'm going to put it........!

It has worked so well Bev that I got another kennel from ebay for £20 (what a bargain!) that is identical and in brilliant condition, so we will be repeating the job again this summer. My daughter spotted the kennel in the garage the other day and said "Since when have you had a dog called Milo?"
