Default confused.com about what to do!

You'll see in my thread on Quinn that I've done the converted drawer (3ft x 2ft) and then wardrobe tortoise table(6ftx3ft), i thought the drawer was too small to add a heated hide so went all out and did a massive wardrobe but it was far too big and couldnt keep the heat in and he just slept all the time so i've put him back in the drawer at the moment. I decided looking at these as they have the built in hide that a heat mat can be mounted too the ceiling / side as at the moment the CHE on thermostat doesn't seem to be working well as the heat just rises and Quinn moves from under it anyway so im basically heating some substrate......hence my thoughts a hide with heat mat would hopefully do the trick. i dont know what to do!!!! I like the hide with heat mat idea but the idea of creating my own one is out balanced by health and safety of the mat not being mounted correct so a pre built one as in the links would be ok.

Have you tried using a sheet of twinwall polycarb and creating a "lid" for you wardrobe (leaving air vents of course!). That should help keep the heat in, could also perhaps divide off the wardrobe width wise until Quinn is bigger.

The Wardrobe got turfed as it was stupidly too big for such a wee thing!! maybe in 3-4 years time it would have been fine for him. I'll mabybe look at a book case or something.

What is the setting on Quinn's thermostat for the CHE?
Maybe try and raise the CHE higher, you only want to take the edge off the cold (if it's a cold room )providing gentle warmth rather than full on heat.
I would try either lowering that thermostat temp a bit and/or trying to raise the CHE which may warm the area gently rather than directly onto a spot so to speak. xx

If your having trouble with winter temperatures, it might make sense to get a viv. This would be much easier to keep warm during the winter.

Dan,

I did consider one for just at night during the winter and then a table during the day....that would work?

It would work but (there is always a but ) tortoises are creatures of habit so moving him back and forth everyday wouldn't be a good idea. I'd just go with the viv for the winter.

Can you recommend a vivarium that has an insert in the roof the heat mat can be slotted into? the ones i find are all on the floor and that would provide much heat for him.

Are you going to get much warmth though from it on the roof?
You might fair better drilling a hole at the side/corner of the hide and perhaps affixing it to the side where he sleeps. xx

in a vivarium and slotted between glass is meant to stop the mat from just having hot spots and evenly distribute the heat better.
