it isn't always the bulb, sometimes it's the bulb holder or the copper contact and - I've never experienced this but Ed says - it can also happen if you have another item on the same circuit. I had one case of the bulb not quite reaching the contact good enough

I've been really pleased with my megaray (so far). Had a real run of bad luck with Solarglos - 3 blew- and I got fed up of them!

The thing about all the bulbs though is the UVB levels are not guaranteed, they are only guaranteed to light up for 6 months or 12 months depending what bulb it is. Solarglo provide "optimum levels of UVB" according to the box but it doesn't state anything specific. My last 2 Solarglos were 39uW/cm2 and 50uW/cm2, dropping down to only 20 after a few days - but they still light up so are not considered faulty

I think that 50 uW/cm2 is nowehere near enough for mediterranean species and that is a shocking rate of decay. With a Megaray you do get a really good output of UVB as long as you get one that actually works.
The other thing about UVB bulbs is thay often last a lot longer if used without a shade because of the extreme buid up of heat that you get at the base of the bulb when using a shade. The MVB lamps have reflectors inside them to direct the light anyway. Of course we still need a ceramic holder though.
