Whilst I would say that they are not suitable for beginners, these frogs do make fantastic captive animals, especially when one starts off with excellent captive bred stock. The fact, that they are "day active" makes them especially interesting. Most Frog and Toad species are nocturnal, which means that during the day when we tend to be looking at them they are for the most part inanimate, and inactive. Dart Frogs on the other hand, are busy in daylight feeding and generally interacting with other frogs.

The term Dart frog comes from the use the native indians have for these creatures, or at least the toxins extracted from their skin secretions. These are used as a chemical agent on their blow pipe darts. The toxins which contain some very powerful neurotoxic compouds render the Indians food prey paralysied when they are injected by the poison darts blown from their blow pipe weapons.

Whites tree frogs are a superb species. I too have these living free in my tropical turtle room. They spend the day tucked up in the Orchid baskets and emerge at night to take over the night shift, catching crickets and other insects. The large male has also been known to catch young gecko's which are also living, and breeding in the room.
