Urgent advice needed!!

Hi
I hope someone can help, Im due to get my first little hermans tort tomorrow, everything is ready except im struggling to get high enough temps with my 60 watt spot light. It is about 30cm from table (im just going to try it closer). But i was wondering roughly how far away are everyone elses? And do they take time to get to temp? I have put thermometer probe on substrate under light. to keep a check. Any help will be much apopreciated.

Hi Jo

If all else fails get a 100w spot.

change the lamp for a 100w if your reflector/holder can take that, i use the 100w combined and they are about 12-14" above substrate, i have used 60w before and i think they must have been about 8" above substrate.

So i think closer should be fine!!

Tell me about the problem! We had our Christmas tree on top of the tort table, as the torts were hibernating, dearest hubby moved my basking light and it took me ages trying to get the temp right after!!

Not to mention spending 3 hours trying to get the basking lamp in the right place on the new tort table this week... But that is another story

To avoid a lot of fiddling about raising and lowering the lamp, wire it through an ordinary dimmer switch (make sure it's the correct rating for the bulb), then you can use a 100W bulb and just dial in the required temp.

Hi everyone

Thanks so much for the advice. I think i was in a panic. I lowered it a bit and it gets to about 32 degrees (i have a thermostat to maintain temps). With it 30cm away it was only getting to about 25 degrees. I go to collect her this afternoon, i will post some pictures when she gets to her new home.

I got her (she was incubated at female temps) from a breeder in east yorkshire. He had kept her over winter so he had one to look after while others were hibernating. She hatched in Oct 06.
