Leopard Species

How can you tell them apart? Would I be able to do it? I imagine the answer to that one will be no as you guys have a lot more knowledge on the breed than I do at the moment.

can anyone recomend a specific Leopard book to give me a few more details?

I will post some photos of my new yound lady later but here are photos of Honey. are they clear enough to get accurate breed identification?

or are there specific shots that I need to take to help with identification

Hi

There are 2 species of Leopard torts :

Geochelone Pardalis Pardalis
Geochelone Pardalis Babcocki

The most common is Geochelone pardalis babcocki - the other, Geochelone Pardalis Pardalis is less domed.

I cant really tell how domed your tort is from the pictures you have shown... maybe a side view would help a little more?

If you got your tort from the pet trade it is highly unlikely that it is pardalis pardalis.

I have attached 2 pictures below... the first is Ringo - who has a more domed shell (leading me to believe he may be Geochelone pardalis babcocki ; the second is Penny who has a sligtly less domed shell who looks like is Geochelone Pardalis Pardalis .

Aren't Penny and Ringo clutch mates? If they are then its not possible they are one of each. They must be either both the same or they may be a cross between the 2.

That's right Peter. When I got my three, one was very different from the other two in colouration and shape. Now three years on they are identical. Young pardalis babcocki can vary enourmously just like torts of other species

Here is another picture of Honey I will take some better ones over next few days

I keep leopards and as already mentioned they can vary tremendously within a subspecies. Somewhere I have pics of an illegal shipment which came into Heathrow. They came from the same area of Africa and varied tremendously. Why not put your question on xxxxxxxxxxxxxxdiscussion group if you are looking for an expert <g>
