Hi Jill
It is a prolapse, you can try bathing in gloucose/sugar water. This can help the swelling go down. I would advise going to the vet if it does not go back.

Jill what ever you do don't allow it to become dry use vasaline to lubricate it and if you can very gently try to push it back in it does work but can be fiddly

Can I ask, what exactly has prolapsed? Is it part of the bowel?

Jill I doubt vasaline will do any damage or be painful, it was once used to help babies with nappy rash.
Yes Jill to be on the safe side I would just get a check over providing you get it back in , it may take a little while to achieve D |

Jill it can rupture yes, so very gentle , and make sure your fingers are lubed up too,
Jill if in any doubt keep moist and clean and straight to vet first thing as I just enlrged the picture and it may well be difficult to coax in without experience D |
