Default Hi all...

hello everyone, I'm Jay, 18 from Dudley - West Midlands. I am looking into buying a tortoise for my mom for her birthday. She has had terrapins since childhood and was devastated when hers died early this year. She has decided she wants a tortoise but i wanted to read up on thier needs before diving into it.

we have a large garden, with a sizeable section that is fenced where the dogs cant get. She wants to keep the tortoise indoors most of the time and let it out on hotter days. I was wondering which species would be advised. We already have a table 44x17 inch and i was wondering whether that would be big enough for one - possibly two tortoises. I am looking to spend £250 max.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jay

EDIT: Was looking at this guy...

HORSEFIELD -A-TORTOISE-2.5yrs old, perfect health, c/w accessories, lighting and heating etc, reluctant sale, £80 no offers

Welcome to shelled warriors, that picture is not a horsfield<g> looks more like med tortoise. Either an ibera or hermans, the picture is not that clear.
It would be far better to buy from a breeder (there is a list of breeders on here) as they are more likey to come without health problems.
Good on you doing the research first.
Tortoises (med torts) do far better if left outside during the Summer months as this is more natural for them.
First time speices for hardyness are Hermans, ibera, marginata and Horsfields.

Talking hello and welcome

yes definatley go to a breeder off this site because i am sure it will save you heartbreak in the future. you hear all sorts of horror stories about pet shops and imported torts. this site is definately the place for you.

good luck with choosing

hope you enjoy the site
