If you read the tortoise trust article on dietary fibre (mainly aimed at Mediterranean tortoise but applicable to others also) they do actually state that an excess of salad type foods will cause diarrhoea and give some pointers of uping fibre using Pre Alpin/dried plants (not hay).

also I know that isn't causing the diarrhea or it would debit every time I have fed it her. it dies it at times when she hasn't eaten lettuce. tortoise table says what I'm feeding is fine and I said is there anything you recommend other than timothy hay and they said no thats best for stars. |

The tortoise trust only recommend a limited amount of salad greens mixed with other food sources as a winter diet NOT as a general diet - take a look at their care sheet for indian star tortoises where it specifically states that a common mistake is feeding too much "wet" food which will cause gut problems. The main ethos seems to be to replicate wild diet as much as possible with a wide variety of food sources etc.

I'm not feeding as a general diet. as I grow mu own in pots.
but tortoise trust recommends as winter feeding which is a quarter of the year. so is for a prolonged period and doesn't cause issues. plus tortoise table said the same thing that what I'm feeding is fine and. I know from experience that the lettuce isn't what is causing it because she has it on days where o don't feed lettuce and the majority of the times o feed lettuce she doesn't have diarrhea. |

Also bear in mind that a tortoises metabolism is very slow so what you feed today may not come out the other end for quite a considerable time and certainly not the same day.
