Default Hi - New to this site and tortoises too

Hi guys,

Found this site today. We have recently become the owners of a 5 yr old horsfield tortoise. My folks moved abroad and Marg moved in with us. Marg is is a vavarium at the mo - little did I know that they weren't good for them (brand new as well!!).

So any anvice on how we can get her sorted on a budget (we have spent a lot of ££s getting the terrapin sorted that we also inherited!)

I have ordered to seeds and stuff to improve her diet, but it is her inside and outside space I am worried about. I have a rather stupid cat so I'm not sure if the tortoise tables would be Ok for Stan - the cat.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Welcome,
Following the advice from others I use indoor guinea pig/ rabbit cages as I have a cat as well. Its the type with the plastic base and wire cage top. The bigger the better. The biggest and best price I found was online at zooplus. But some people make theyre own woodwn ones and theyre much prettier.
Hope this helps

Thanks guys. I have been out and bought a guinea pig cage which Marg is now in. It is much better than the vibarium and has a larger hidey place. Also got her a new bridge to climb on and a slate tile to eat off.

Happier now her indoor home is better for her.

Thanks for the advice.

Has anyone any ideas on what we can use as a shield for the UVA / B light??

Hi Cookie welcome to SW

Glad you are finding out plenty of good advice and ideas to improve Marg's life. Well done for the changes you have made so far

Sorry not sure what you mean by shield for the uv lamp. But you can buy a reflector at pet shops to go over the top of the strip or simply just drape tinfoil over the top so all the light goes down and is easy on the eyes. Sorry if thats not what you meant
