Default Hermanns lost in hibernation! advice please.

I have been shocked to find one of my male Hermanns dead after my weekly hibernation check. I'm rather worried now about my others, should i bring them out and try again next year or leave them down? They were all healthy and eating and drinking before winding them down, they have been hibernating now for the past month.
Thanks for any advice.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I'd suggest you slowly bring out the rest. Is this the first year you've hibernated the tortoises? How big are they?

Hi. No i have been keeping Hermanns for many years and have never lost any before in hibernation! The male was 7 years old who died and all the rest of my group are aged between 7 and 14 years old.

With that much experience I guess you would know better than me as to what went wrong.

Sorry to hear this. Maybe the tortoise was unwell before going into hibernation and you had not noticed. As you say, you are experienced. If everthing was the same as other years in the set up, maybe the tortoise would have died anyway.

Yes your probably correct shelled lady! they do hide ailments very well. It's just the shock of finding him dead has made me worry about the others. At the moment they are all still down, but i'm still in two minds whether to bring them out and put some weight on them and leave them till next year.
Thanks for reply.

When I lose a tortoise in hibernation... it is my fault. I did something wrong. If you had it for some years before...

I agree with shelled Lady, you clearly know what your doing, you can't always notice if something is wrong, they do hide problems, he may have died anyway.
So sorry. I lost an old one after last winters hibernation, sometimes these things happen and it's not necessarily your fault
