Jackson Ratio

I have been looking at the Jackson Ratio to see how alfie is doing but cant seam to work it out (shock lol

)

please can someone help me - he is 10 cm and 240g

Hey Fi,

Just had a quick glance at the chart and your little Alfie is doing fine. He should be averaging around 225 grams at 100mm (carapace length) so he's slightly over but that's very healthy. My little one is still trying to put weight on after being poorly last winter. She's getting there though! Fingers crossed for hibernation this year.

thank you very much for your positive reply - was worried about him as, as i said b4 the vet told me he was under weight when i first got him as he was kept with other torts much bigger than he was and the scoffed all the food b4 him.

does this mean he is okay to be hibernated at this weight - incase people cant tell i am so stressed i am gonna screw up hibernation.

Even experienced keepers do worry about hibernation, we just know if you follow the steps, then
provided they are healthy, they do so much better for it.

Jackson's Ratio is a chart used to determine the ratio between the SCL length of your tortoise (the carapace length) and the weight of the tortoise to determine its health status prior to hibernating or to assist in obtaining an average growth rate.

There are 2 charts, one for babies and juveniles and another for sub adults and adults.

It is also only applicable to mediteranean species of tortoises such as spur thighs and hermans.

And even though horsfields are sometimes classified as Med tortoises, the Jackson ratio doesn't apply to them.
