I lost my tort in my garden and found him 7 years later, around this time last year. I am convinced he was living in the area behind where the trampoline is and going under the fence into the field behind. That's why we didn't see him. My theory is that he spent the daytime in the field and came back in at night. Look around the edges for any sign of disturbed soil. It might not be a hole as it could fill in after the tort has gone under. With the dry conditions the soil is loose. Look for hot spots in yours and neighbours gardens where he might bask during the day or edible weeds/plants that he might find attractive.
I hope you find him, don't give up hope. We did and that's why we didn't get him back for 7 years, we thought he was long gone although I did have a feeling he wasn't dead. Torts don't wander very far from the area they live if there is plenty of vegetation and usually return at some point to the original spot. Make sure there is water available so he doesn't have to go in search of it. We had an old hamster cage base that filled with rain water, all accidental, it just got left out after a hamster died, by my daughter.
Good luck and I hope you find him, I know how hard it is to lose one. I never stopped thinking about Herbie. I look at him even now, a year after finding him, and can't believe we got him back.

Wow! Thank you, that's given me alot more hope. I certainly won't ever give up looking for him - we've had yet another good search today.
Many thanks for the wonderful support, it really is appreciated x

I won't keep adding to this thread and bumping over other tortoises lost...

I just wanted to add that I've spent most of today searching for Sid (not only in the garden but locally, rescue centres etc...).. and I will never give up on him.
He arrived here the size of a 50p piece, and although I now have Bill and babyBen to tend to, and Nancy - Sid is VERY much missed.
I haven't slept properly since he's been missing, and I have to now 'back off' abit.. I have become obsessed with him being missing.

.. with his siblings

How teeny he was on arrival

growing!..

Just seen your post - and wanted to sympathise - having lost my 50+ year old Hermanns at the beginning of June (the Shropshire one posted about on this forum - and lots of other places). Like you, I am still totally devastated and keep worrying about him - but am so helped by all the supportibve people on this forum
I do hope you get your boy back!

Thank you - and you too xxxx - It's horrid, isn't it.
Everyone I meet locally, I sneak in the fact he's missing to get the word out further - and I can't go out without looking for him all the time.

Quite - I wish mine had been left alone to just wander locally - there might have been some chance he would wander back - or someone who knew would have seen him and brought him back easily instead of my looking for a needle in a haystack - one lost tortoise somewhere!

He's bacccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:r azz:

This morning, my daughter went out to the garden to see Bill (our big Greaca) mounting what she thought was a brick.
It was Sid!!
Totally caked with mud (it's taken several bathes to clen him up) and a cut to his leg, but other than that, he's fine.

He must have hybernated, and the very hot day had woken him up.

He's eaten, drank - trundled into the house and snuggled into one of the dog beds as usual, as if he'd not been awol at all.

As you can imagine we are thrilled to bits. Thank you SO MUCH for all your support. I hope with everything that those still missing tortoises can gain hope from this escapade!
