Hi Andy,

Bathing is really important for torts, as it helps with hydration (and also they almost always wee and poo in the bath, so it saves a bit on cleaning out the enclosure). Put your tort in something like a washing up bowl or a kitty litter tray (something it can't see out of). Put warm water in that comes up to where the top of the tort's shell meets the bottom - sort of at chin level, and just leave him there for about 15 or 20 minutes. You might have to take out some water and replace it to keep it nice and warm, and if you train a desk lamp on one end of the bath, the heat from the bulb will help to keep it warm. Some people pat dry their torts after a bath and others don't. You should probably bathe him two or three times a week. If, when he wees, his urates (the white stuff) look sandy or gritty, then it means he is dehydrated and so you should increase the baths. If it's creamy or liquidy then that's fine. Lots of torts hate baths at first and try and get out. Try and keep him in there, but if he's really stressed you can take him out early. Most torts get used to it and quite enjoy it after a while.
