My cousin has found a tort in his garden today, some white paint stuff on its back that possibly had an address on it.

Looks like an ibera from here, but a closer picture of the front end would be good. And a picture of the plasteron.

Hi there is a place where you can log lost and found torts; John Hayward coordinator of the national theft register, 01869 325699 mobile: 07802 404929 or email jh@ntr.supanet.com
Karen PS I think it's a testudo graeca graeca, because of the rounded sides of the front central scute and the long narrow nuchal scute

Well as Sandy said it's a Spur-thigh, Testudo graeca ibera, masquerading as a Hermanns. Did the owners have a picture?

lots of people are saying the same, I have no contact details for the owners... so looks like we will never know for sure! My cousin did say the tort had been handed down through 3 generations of their family and they had reported it missing earlier in may. Thankfully I convinced him to get in touch with an emergency vet and thats how they found the owner

So pleased that he's been reunited with his owners.
We have an elderly family friend who has had a tortoise since she was a child. He's now 70 and she had no idea what he was (he's a gorgeous big ibera). I'm not sure people always knew what they had back then when the tortoises were shipped in and sold cheaply and they don't think to do any research. To her a tortoise was just a tortoise.
