I do actually now have a quote for what I have requested... and I've sent back a mockup (photoshop) of the doors etc.
The quote is not pretty, but I guess if you consider that an insulated house is pretty much 2 houses, one inside the other, it will give you an idea of what it's come to.

I've also asked for some additional rubberised roof covering (as per the normal tortoise house they sell).

This is what I photoshopped up from this picture: http://www.northumberlandjoinery.co....duck-house.php

I don't have any experience with outside tortoise house. Can I ask, what is the rubberised roof covering for?

I see. Somehow I imagined that all the houses that are sold there are meant to be outside, so I thought that the weather would be taken into consideration automatically. I didn't think that one has to ask for extra additions (and pay extra money) to cover things that are essential. Those I would have thought should be already in the basic price.

Hanako, I think it's about longevity, wood is a natural product, and inevitably will deteriorate. The houses are suitable for outside, but if you want to put any electrics inside it needs to be waterproof, or keep the warmth inside, or make the wood last longer, then the more rain you keep off the house the better. All my tort houses are bought 'timber treated' yet I still give them three coats of timber-care in an effort to make the houses last longer, and I sometimes beef up the roof felt covering, as some roofing felts are thin and will only last a year or two, I guess that is reflected in the price.

Well, the standard tortoise house does have this as standard... but the duck house doesn't need to be quite as waterproof.... ducks are a lot more used to the wet
So I just wanted that little extra protection (and sealing)

I didn't know they did insulation as well, if id known at the time I could have saved myself a lot of hard work doing it myself!!! It must be a new thing since they made my tort shed back in July 2012, they didn't have a tort shed then, when I asked if they could add a small drop down door and add a rubberised roof which lasts longer than felt to convert a dog kennel into a tort shed, I told them I wanted to insulate it and could they add a Perspex window instead of a mesh one that was advertised. I'm glad they are doing it now, I will certainly order from them again for my male x

I think that looks great, I like this one as I can ask them to add a partition wall inside (or just add one myself) for my 2 males x
