Foxes
i've been looking through a lot of the outdoor housing pics and i've noticed that many of them don't seem to have protection against foxes on top. is this necessary? in my area we have foxes and i'm worried that they might attack my torts, if there was no protection.
what do you think?

My outdoor enclosure has a little lock on the roof and has wire under the soil.
I agree, people should have a roof or net or something. As alot of people say 'we dont get foxes' How do you know for sure? Just as you have never seen one. I have never seen a fox in my garden, but know i have them as my cctv camera showed me that we have a pair and a badger.

i'm just asking because i am planning a big new outdoor enclosure and it would be a lot less trouble to make if an anti fox protector on top was not required.

my outside enclosure is about 6x5ft and has a simple chicken wire top with a wooden frame and is hinged at the back. as we have a cat and so do lots of the neighbours!! its better to be safe than sorry i suppose

Personally I would put a top on your enclosure. I've just made my first enclosure and my husband is
going to make a 'lid' for it with wooden frame and quite substantial wire on it. He's going to do it in about 3 sections as this will be easier and they will be sturdier. I think if you are going to leave your tort out at night, which I am, even if you've never seen a fox in your garden (I haven't!) it just gives you peace of mind and you know you little tort will be safe! |

I always put my torts in their houses at night, but then living in the country I'd never leave anything not shut up, through the day they are outside but I'm here and their part of the garden is pretty secure I also think that unless you keep rabbits or something that smells attractive that torts don't smell like meat to predators, I've never noticed any smell from mine apart from poo which gets picked up plus they don't exactly run around and attract attention, my mums old dog literally fell over my torts and didn't appear to notice them untill they moved which led me to believe that either they don't smell or if they do don't smell like meat, but don't take any risks, give them plenty of cover to hide under let the grass and plants grow enough to hide them.

chicken wire on top of enclosures is also a must to stop birds getting to the torts, such as magpies and crows
Not so relevent if you have bigger torts but thought id throw it in just incase!! Jo x |

I think alot of members just take pics with their protective covers off so you can see their landscaping better

My torties go into a house a night. I coudln't make a cover for my enclosure, it is far too large. Also, my torties are very alrge and heavy to carry, so I doubt a fox could even consider carrying one off !
