Hi! Maggie has arrived today.. any idea on its age and possible subspecies? tks.
Hi,
I have 2 horsfields (male and female) and today I went to buy a few more thermometers and seen a beauty on the shop. the shop owner apparently had her for a few months there and no one wanted her she is a beauty and I've fallen in love with her. I've called her Maggie and brought her home the guy told me she is probably around 5 y old. would like someone to tell me if they agree on her age and if any idea what horsfield subspecies she is? tks |

She looks to be Testudo horsfieldii horsfieldii and probably 7 or 8 years old.

Hi Dan, i'm a new member here, but been following this forum for a while.
you;re a legend i really also thought she was a bit older the other 2 I have are younger (male and female), and they came with a bit of piramidism unfortunelly, I've been trying to give them the right conditions and I hope with time I can smooth their shell down a bit. Like many others I've been told when I started that I should keep them in a vivarium but after seeing this and other forum, they are being changed to guinea pig cages (1.20m long cages). see my current setting and advise if you would change anything Dan please. BEFORE (WITH THE VIVARIUM) NOW: |

Your set up looks perfectly fine to me. The only thing you might want to do is add more substrate for her to dig in.

Hi,
Nice tortoise and set up. One thing though, just checked on Tortoise Table site and although it does not say that primrose/primulas are poisonous ,they do not recommend them as suitable for torts. Meriel |

tks Dan, the bulb I have currently is a reptigo 125w combined bulb (UV and basking spot) on a reptiglow large!
should I place extra bulb for more heating Dan? I've bought also a heat emitter 150w bulb from exoterra ready to be set. also have a IR one 100w, but I think its not ideal to set an infrared one, right? I'll present also the other 2 I have (with me now for 3 months). Cesar and Daisy the poor things seem to have piramidism on their shell they are on a wide diet of greens only, mainly weeds bought from the shelled warriors shop that I've planted. their outdoor space is ready and will be occupied probably only around May (as I'm in newcastle.. very cold here..) their food is sprinkled with repiluxe and reptavite 2 to 3x/week and on warm baths 2x/week. opinions are welcome, anything else I can give them? about their claws, should I trim them down or should I give them hard surfaces for them to walk on and allow nature to work by itself. by the way.. Cesar I'm sure he is a Cesar (male), but Daisy.. I'm getting doubts about her.. could she, be a him? lol And Dan, if you can tell me their subspecies and age also! are they horsfieldii horsfieldii too? CESAR (male. age: unknown) DAISY (male/female???? age: unknown) best regards everybody |

What are you getting for temperatures under the basking lamp?
They both look to be T. h. horsfieldii. The first one is a male and the second one is looking more male to me. Danny
