I've spoken to Martin and he apologises for missing this one. Apparently the list on Tortoisefriends was based on Jane's own observations of what she observed her russians eating with no ill effects, and of course we know now that Russians
have evolved to beat grazing competition by eating plants poisonous to
other animals. Not to be recommended as a general tortoise food, though unfortunately.
Hope this helps

Thanks Sue, It was just a little query, I would never feed a tortoise anything that was'nt on the edible plant list just not worth taking any chances especially when their is so many plants they can eat anyway.
Thank you
Beverley

Personally, as we give russians a slightly different environment than they have in the wild I would tend to avoid it Peter. I suppose theoretically they should be OK as the bulk of the russians we have are wild caught and therefore 'geared' to be able to eat them, but I suppose we do not know how much of other plants would be mixed in with them in their wild state. I am only basing this on the fact that we do not feed our torts with great quantities of food in captivity, the way they would be doing in the wild in preparation for aestivation. Others may have different ideas

Most torts DO avoid toxic plants to some degree but there are always the few dipsticks amongst them LOL
