I always get ex bats too! They need so much care in the early days when they don't have the strength to climb up the ramp to bed and need carrying up every night but then over time there are gradually less and less of them to put away as they gain strength. I love watching my ex bats. They are unrecognisable from the sorry state they were in initially with no feathers and no leg strength. They are such characters. I am sure that they bond better with you too cos of all the extra care they get when they are at their most vulnerable. I remember the wonderful feeling when one of my ex bats really struggled to get up the ramp, never quite making it then one evening after watching her fail twice on her third go she made it!! There were cheers all round!!

Just reading this thread. We have hens, ducks & geese. Our most recent 6 ex bats are all called Diana - long story - but one of the Dianas is adept at either coming in the window or through the cat flap! She is often found in somewhat unexpected places - bedrooms, on the sofa, in the bathroom etc. I agree that ex bats seem to have more personality somehow, than many pure breeds.

Love the idea of one Diana coming through the cat flap Yep, any more chickens have got to be ex bats. We ended up with just 3 of the "rescues" left, and one is the white cockerel! We did have ducks until earlier this year when a badger came to call. 2013 has not been a good year for our chickens and ducks

What ducks do you have - ornamental or standard?
