That's what you believe. It is not a fact. The fact is that they do not NEED a great deal of space.
Lets compare the average apartment in the UK to the average apartment in the US. Yes... to provide as much space as possible is probably beneficial. Not... place me in a box and provide me with all my worldly needs... I'd probably be better for it. That tortoise is nowhere near 'rammed' in a box.

Don't quite see your point.
Except... that, maybe... you're implying that I'm a bad owner or any keeper that keeps their tortoise in an enclosure that is smaller than what you believe is proper... is a bad keeper. This is exactly the point of this exchange on my part. I'm am reading too often... you have to... this is a need... and this mentality gets regurgitated... it is wrong. If you were such a good keeper you should not even keep reptiles in the UK... according to others beliefs. I believe a good keeper is nonjudgemental and offers open advice...

were do you keep your torts EJ?
torts eat they need to burn off their food, were can that happen if the vivs too small, if a gold fish is in a bowl it swims round and round in circles looking at its own tail. why should we not keep reptiles in the UK? my advise to the owner/new owner "the tort needs a new viv" |

A smaller enclosure... they need less... if you feed them too much they grow 'too fast'.
I keep some in shoe boxes... some in pens outdoors... some in pens indoors... some have free range of the yard... it depends. According to some 'experts'... animals should not be kept outside of their native range. I'm guessing the OP did not post this in the hopes of asking for advice. I'm guessing that they posted it to show the poor condition the tortoise is in with the hopes of the tortoise being 'saved'. Saying the tortoise needs a larger enclosure is not advice. This is more along the lines of a command and... again... is not based on fact. Quote:

Sorry to interfere chaps, but the ad says that it doesn't come with the heat bulb or the light unit for the UV as they need it for another viv. Thats how I read it anyway.

we all have opinions/advise mine is its too small, yours its adequate.
who else has an opinion? lets see what others think then take it from there. "I'm guessing that they posted it to show the poor condition the tortoise is in with the hopes of the tortoise being 'saved'." odd statement. dont think she mention the condition just the link and regarding heat. |

That's how I read it too. As regards housing I think it's the same with any animal. We all have our own opinions on what's acceptable and what's not. Keeping any animal in captivity means it's not going to have the same space it would in the wild so you could argue that whatever is provided will never be enough.

Not an odd statement at all...
Placed into context... read the title... nothing but a photo posted... There is either going to be a flutter of... 'Oh that is horrible' or 'that tortoise needs to be saved'... Meanwhile... I'm sure there are many keepers who monitor this forum who are looking at the responses thinking 'OMG, I'm doing it all wrong'... all based on those who KNOW how a tortoise MUST be maintained.
