This is exciting, I would love a sulcata, but I definately do not have the room at the moment, maybe one day if I win the lottery.

all I'll say is that with a rescue try to make sure its a healthy one and not being rehomed due to problems, you'd need a big car and deep pockets for vet bills. If you look at most of the adults espesially those being rehomed many are badly mishapen and the decent ones are for sale for large amounts, even some of the 'bad' ones are for sale again at far more than the average med tort. We chose a last years baby for our first sully, he came to us earlier this year as we felt we needed the growing with him rather than being plonked straight in, however he's not what we expected being very laid back and not being a pig like we were told, one thing I've noticed is that he goes backwards far more than my meds. He backs under things like a crab and shoots out high up on his front legs if he's disturbed he does look funny, and he won't eat if you're watching.

Owning a sully is a lot like eating a very spicy vindaloo, its a very hands on job and your either gonna love or hate it,i defo think you should get a re homer just because i think they defo deserve a second chance, and babies can be hard to grow on,a bigger tort will be much more hardy.....best of luck either way

I imagine they are like owning a dog
can anyone tell me the disadvantages of having one, also what are the positives? How much time do they need per day?what is their personalities like and what are the differences in behaviour between the sexes? Thanks Jackie

Hi Jackie,
Whichever home you choose for the tort it will need to be very well insulated we use either polystyrene or this new insulation board which I cannot think of the name of! A spotlight which will vary in wattage from 120W to 240W dependant on the time of year. A large water bowl but must be VERY HEAVY they will knock it over! Access to a nice grassy area they enjoy as well and will soon grase it to nothing. The biggest problem area is making sure they are warm enough they will come out on dull days but only if they are warm and stay for a short while then go back into their 'house'. Feeding anything and everything they eat a lot!!! Plenty of calcium added as well. How big is the one you are looking at? Disadvantages cost a lot in electric bills and food. Very friendly lovely animals to keep still miss mine. Males together can fight. Females Ok Not easy to sex till quite big. Substrate we use just grass they eat this as well. Another bad point can poo and wee for England!! Quote:
