That is awful!!!!! Ive heard some bad husbandry stories on here, but that is really bad. Does you friend not care about this tort. Surely anyone should know this is a bad way to keep a tortoise even without any knowledge of them.

Thats a start I guess, but i am truly concerned. Even lettuce and cucumber would be better than mushrooms. But it should be having natural weeds.

Well if this viv you are giving him is for the redfoot he will need a bark mulch floor covering as deep as will allow, this needs to be kept dampish a good spray daily with a mister will help hold the moisture creating a humid enviroment .
Day temps need to be in the region of 88-90. a aslightly cooler area can be given but reds usually stick to the warm humid area uvb is not as essential as thought as reds can derive d3 from there diet plus through the vitamin/mineral supplement.

Diet well mushrooms sorry Eddie are fine redfoots come form tropical rainforest edges were fungi supply a part of there daily diet but mushrooms as a sole diet isn't good at all.

Diet should consist of a varied amount of greens weedy diets is good but redfoots have a much quicker digestive tract compared to med or grassland tortoises so they process food much quicker so a diet heavy in fiberoious weeds is not recommended as they will draw out little nutrition so the weeds need really tobe supplemented with fruit and veg such as mango, papaya courgette and boiled sweet potatoe a ratio of 70% greens(weeds varied lettuce endive etc no cabbage) and 30% fruit. Calcium should be added on every meal I feed daily with a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement 2-3 times weekly I recommend nutrabol.

Extras to the diet are occasional feeds of animal protien this is were they will derive there D3 content from, these feeds can consist of snails , boiled chicken or hydrated cat or dog complete biscuits a low protien type is best I find the cheaper varieties are best as they are more vegatable than meat but these feeds are vitamin enriched D3 being one of them , always add calcium to all protien diets .
I feed animal protien once weekly a tea spoon per baby or a small handful per adult.

If theres anything else please ask i hope you can get the tortoises but if not this info should help.

Darren

Hi just a quick one i would suggest if possible to turn the viv on its back so its like an open top table this might also give it more room to move in depending on size of course hope this helps Nicky
