Default Build it higher?

As an expectant father of a young Tort, having recently capitulated to my daughters request. I spent this evening beginning the build for the table. I have built the first section - but am now undecided on how to finish off.

Currently I have used one layer of 6" pine board on a 3ft x 2 ft base. Assuming that I will need a couple of inches of substrate, I will have just 4" of 'side' to the table - so I am sure I have to go higher to prevent an easy Fosbury flop.

This is the build to date.

I was looking at the wall construction of this table:

and thinking of adding a second pine board to the back of mine - but having the front and two sides above the pine use clear polycarbonate glass to raise the height. The idea being to make the walls higher but without the walls blocking too much ambient light.

I plan a combined heat / UVB lamp and inevitably will be close ish to the walls. Has anyone used polycarbonate walls and had any problems regarding the lamp heat?

Cheers

Mim.

Hi yours looks great but I would deffinaltly make the sides higher and think the one you've added a pic of would be a great way to do so x

If you add 2 inches of substrate you will lose some of the access to the door on the hide too.

My thought about using polycarb wall's down to the base, with a heat bulb is, the polycarb may get too hot maybe not enough to melt, but hot, hot to the touch, if you know what i mean, timber soak's the heat from lamp's better. As they have been tried and tested. Polycarb could/might be used away from tort contact. If it get's too hot from the bulb.

I was thinking the same thing. Anyway - I completed the build as below. The lamp will arrive in a day or so so will load up the substrate and see how it goes.
