No Vikki I've not found it difficult to keep any of them up. But none of them has been hibernated year after year so might not be primed to do it.
I think a problem in keeping any of them up would happen if I let any of them slow down too much when they were still outside. If the tortoise slowed down really seriously it might not respond to being brought indoors and put under lamps. This year I didn't use any heating outdoors overnight and some nights it went down to 6 or 7 centigrade. In theory that would trigger an unstoppable slowdown but in practice that didn't happen with any of them.

Thanks for the info - love this forum as everybody is so helpful and willing to share their opinions and experiences but without judgement so very helpful to a newbie like me to make informed decisions - thanks everyone any more thoughts/opinions/stories to share would be great

Thanks Suze. I have definitely decided to overwinter this year so was just gaining thoughts on the whole concept of its necessity and all the answers have given me food for thought.
